Comarca Andorra Sierra de Arcos

The Comarca Andorra-Sierra de Arcos is the administrative institution responsible for the territory where the Caminos Mineros are located and for the development, coordination and promotion of this cultural project. Located in the province of Teruel in northern Aragon, the Comarca encompasses towns including Andorra, Ariño, Alloza, Oliete and others, and is known for its dramatic landscapes, rich geological features, and long history of coal extraction that profoundly influenced its social and economic life.

Through strategic planning and investment — including funding from the Spanish Institute for Just Transition and European Next Generation funds — the Comarca has restored historical mining routes and integrated them into a framework for sustainable tourism and healthy outdoor activities. This work goes beyond simple trail marking: it includes the publication of dedicated web resources, multimedia materials, downloadable guides and the inclusion of the routes on major outdoor platforms such as Wikiloc, making them accessible to a broad audience.

In collaboration with local cultural associations, universities, volunteers and international partners in the European Mining Routes network, the Comarca Andorra-Sierra de Arcos also promotes events, interpretive programmes and community walks that highlight the region’s industrial memory and its role in European mining history. Efforts are underway to elevate the Caminos Mineros project further by seeking formal recognition as a European Cultural Route, which would situate these paths within a transnational dialogue on heritage, identity and sustainable development.
