Cammino Minerario
di Santa Barbara

Italy

The Cammino Minerario di Santa Barbara extends across the south-western area of Sardinia along a network of paths covering approximately 500 km, divided into 30 stages that can be traveled on foot, by bicycle, or on horseback. More than just a hiking route, it represents a journey through a territory profoundly shaped by centuries of mining activity, where galleries, industrial structures, and workers’ settlements stand as tangible expressions of a still-vivid heritage.

This industrial dimension unfolds within a landscape of remarkable beauty, where rugged coastlines, Mediterranean vegetation, and wild inland areas alternate in a constantly changing panorama. The remains of mining activity are not perceived as interruptions, but as integral parts of the broader environmental and cultural fabric, gradually reabsorbed into the landscape and transformed into meaningful landmarks.

Adding further depth to this layered environment is the presence of much older traces of human settlement. Along the route, visitors encounter significant examples of prehistoric and protohistoric archaeology, including nuraghi, domus de janas, and Giants’ Tombs. These sites harmoniously interact with both the natural environment and the remnants of industrial archaeology, creating a continuous narrative spanning thousands of years.

The trail becomes an immersive experience, where physical movement is intertwined with cultural discovery. Each stage provides the opportunity to interpret the territory as a complex system in which nature, ancient civilizations, and mining history coexist, offering an authentic and dynamic understanding of local identity.
