The European Federation of Santa Barbara Mining Routes – MINES.B and the University of Cagliari (UNICA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at promoting structured forms of collaboration in the fields of research, enhancement of mining heritage, and sustainable territorial development.
The University of Cagliari builds upon a well-established academic tradition in Mining Engineering, with its first degree program dating back to 1939. This legacy of knowledge and expertise has evolved into the current degree programs in Environmental and Land Engineering and in Environmental Engineering for Sustainable Development, which continue to advance scientific and technical research in the areas of management, safety, and enhancement of mining territories.
The Memorandum establishes a framework for the development of joint initiatives in the technical-scientific and cultural domains, with the objective of fostering interdisciplinary research activities, promoting the regeneration and enhancement of former mining sites, and supporting development models based on environmental, economic, and social sustainability. The agreement also предусматриes the involvement of students, PhD candidates, and researchers in educational, training, and project-based activities, as well as joint participation in regional, national, and European funding programs and calls.
The signing of this Memorandum represents a significant strengthening of institutional synergies between the research system and the international network of mining routes, contributing to the consolidation of the European Mining Route and to the promotion of integrated strategies for the protection and enhancement of Europe’s mining heritage.
