Cultural Exchange between Poland and Sardinia: The Coal Mining Museum of Zabrze Studies the Santa Barbara Mining Trail

A delegation from the Coal Mining Museum of Zabrze, Poland, visited the Cammino Minerario di Santa Barbara Foundation (CMSB) from April 10 to 17, as part of a project supported by a grant from the Culture Moves Europe – Individual Mobility Action program. The purpose of the visit was to study a well-established example of a mining itinerary, with the aim of creating a similar initiative in the Polish mining region of Silesia.

The delegation, composed of Joanna Pierchała, Łucja Zawadzka, Ewa Wojtoń, and Joanna Klik, all professionals in the cultural and museum sector, followed some stages of the trail and took part in a program of visits and meetings. These included some of the most important sites of Sardinia’s mining heritage: from the Monteponi and Porto Flavia mines, to the Montevecchio mining village, and the  Santa Barbara Cave.

The visit was a significant opportunity for an exchange of knowledge and dialogue between two realities united by a common goal: to preserve and enhance mining heritage, both tangible and intangible. Activities included technical workshops, guided tours, meetings with former miners, and key figures who preserve the historical memory of the territory.

The Polish delegation expressed the interest in joining the European Mining Routes of Santa Barbara Federation as soon as possible, with the intention of establishing a mining itinerary of their own, inspired by the best practices already adopted by the members of the MINES.B Federation
